Most of us probably know about the tragedy of the Titanic – the ship that sunk on her maiden voyage in 1912 when she hit an iceberg. ๐ข
Whatโs even more tragic is that if the captain of the Titanic had just turned the rudder in time and changed the course of the ship, she would never have hit that iceberg and would have reached her destination safely.๐จ๐ผโโ๏ธ
The outcome of that situation could have been entirely different if an adjustment had just been made to the RUDDER. โธ๏ธ
In James chapter 3 God tells us that we have a rudder that steers the course of our lives – and itโs our TONGUE. ๐
What we say with our tongue is either steering us toward a desirable destination or toward tragedy. โ๏ธ
Our tongue is either navigating us out of the ocean of icebergs (problems) or turning us in circles to crash repeatedly against the them. ๐
And verses 9-10 warn us how our rudder (our tongue) keeps us turning in circles and never moving forward away from our situations:
โWith it (our tongue) we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men who have been made in the image of God. Out of the SAME MOUTH come blessing and cursing. Brothers, these things SHOULD NOT BE.โ
So we might be praising God for His promises and speaking the Word for healing, wisdom, provision, peace, or direction, and our tongue (our rudder) is steering us to that destination. ๐ ๐ฅฐ
But God says that we canโt expect to go anywhere if we are also CURSING MEN, because we are constantly turning our rudder in the opposite direction. ๐ ๐ฐ
What is โcursing menโ?
๐ก Criticising governments or politicians = cursing men.
๐ก Gossiping about people = cursing men.
๐ก Discussing how people have wronged us = cursing men.
๐ก Condemning people who irritate/disagree with/upset us = cursing men.
๐ก Complaining about coworkers/church leaders/friends/family – ANYONE = cursing men.
Speaking badly of people – ANY people – is cursing men and it pulls our rudder away from our desired destination of healing, provision, and peace, and just like the rudder on the Titanic, keeps us tossing on an ocean of problems and eventually, disaster.๐ฑ
But donโt worry there is some GOOD NEWS! ๐
WE are the captains of our ship! ๐จ๐ผโโ๏ธ๐ฉ๐พโโ๏ธ
WE can take control of our rudders and WE can ensure we arrive at our desired destination with no delays. ๐ข
WE can control our tongue. ๐ ๐ซข
WE can decide to ONLY speak words of life and grace and blessing. ๐
And God will help us to do it!
Along with your confessions of faith for healing, etc, say this:
โLord, I love you, and I love my neighbour as I love myself. I see people as Jesus sees them – through eyes of grace. I love life and desire to see good days, therefore I will keep my tongue from evil, twisted speech. Thank you that I can do this because I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me.โ (Ps 34:13, Mk 12:30, Phil 4:13)
People may not be doing the right thing but they are still made in Godโs image and He LOVES them, and so should we. โ๏ธ=โค๏ธ
When the temptation comes to speak badly of people, donโt fall for the momentary, fleshly gratification. ๐ซขโ๏ธ
Sailing safely through and reaching our destination with no delay is WORTH IT. ๐๐ผ๐ฅฐ #faithtalks
